renards-folly-review-jim-mcmahonrenards-folly-review-jim-mcmahonThe Renards Folly 2009 McLaren Vale Shiraz - which is deep red/purple with a lovely crimson/pink hue. The nose is awash with ripe blackberry fruit. The first thing that hits you when you taste this wine is the full-on depth of the blackberry/mulberry fruit flavours. Liquorice and spicy flavours can also be found in this wine which has palate weight and length, and a long silky tannin structure with minimal oak prevalent.

The Renards Folly 2011 Sauvignon Blanc Semillon - we don't often see a Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon blend come out of McLaren Vale, this style is more in keeping with Margaret River. The Renards Folly McLaren Vale 2011 Sauvignon Blanc/Semillon has eye appeal with tropical fruit aromas in abundance and a citrusy streak which is also evident. The palate has copious amounts of the same fruits and is refreshingly crisp with a lime, pass ionfruit finish. This is one little boutique winery giving others in the west a run for their money. It's a zippy little number - check this out when next in McLaren Vale.

2009 Sangiovese Cabernet

"Interesting and challenging wine reminiscent of a savoury Italian style"

2009 Shiraz

"Intense chocolaty bouquet with nice spicy/earthy notes. Very ripe syrupy fruit-driven palet wrapped in some really powerful oak"

James Halliday's wine tasting note.

Rating: 91

Drink By: 2020

Price: $19.95

Date Tasted: 25 Jan 2011

Good colour; an attractive medium-bodied wine with a positive bouquet bringing together the blackberry, dark chocolate and plum fruit characters also displayed on the balanced palate, oak a minor player.

Grape Expectations' Max Crus reviews Renards Folly ShirazWine column Grape Expectations by Max Crus - July 2011

Renards Folly McLaren Vale
Shiraz 2009, $20.

Chunky winter stuff that will be anyone's folly by bottle's end ... if you're lucky.

8.4/10.

Paddy Kendler - Herald Sun Newspaper, Melbourne 11th August 2009

An instantly appealing McLaren Vale shiraz with aromas of black berries, plum and sweet spice and open and generous berry fruit flavor with a lick of licorice. Medium-bodied and well balanced with mild oak and fine, soft, dry tannins. It's definitely worth trying and reasonably priced.

Tony Love - The Advertiser, Adelaide Wednesday 19th August 2009

Three Sangiovese blends from McLaren Vale also offer further evidence that mixing it up is the way ahead. Renards Folly 2008 Sangiovese/Cabernet (13.5%; $16.95; 89 points) shows a good smattering of the spice, with a friendly tannin profile.
